Utah Attorney General John Swallow

It’s been quite a week for Utah’s new Attorney General John Swallow. Sworn into office last Monday, then spending his first weekend denying involvement in a deal to bribe a Senator in an attempt to quash a federal probe into a Utah businessman. It’s a fascinating story by Tribune reporters Robert Gehrke and Tom Harvey, who have been way out in front on it.

This post isn’t about taking sides. You can read the story and make up your own mind. I’m just posting a couple photos I’ve taken of John Swallow. The first one’s from 2001:

Assignment #315 – Curtis Allgier

Curtis Allgier apologized to the family members of his victim before being sentenced.

This one started off pretty rough. The assignment read something like, The judge might kick you out of the courtroom if you take too many photos.

Weird, I’d never had a problem. But before I knew it, I was directed to sit in the gallery, right next to the victim’s many family members. It’s a horrible position, shooting from behind. For the first ten minutes or so all I could do was try to shoot through the tiny gap between two of the many officers in the courtroom providing security.

I shot what I could when Allgier stood at the podium and addressed the judge, but all I had was back.

But then Allgier turned and spent a long time apologizing to the family for his actions.

And the horrible position the judge had put me in turned out to be the optimum position in the entire courtroom.
